Woodland Backsplash

Created as part of the Lakeside Kitchen renovation, the Woodland Backsplash transforms a functional kitchen surface into a continuous illustrated landscape. The custom woodland tile backsplash incorporates original artwork created by an artist in Canada, with individually painted tiles depicting branches, birds and woodland animals across the room.

The illustrated band is surrounded by softly varied white field tile, allowing the artwork to remain the focal point without overwhelming the kitchen. Owls, birds, a fox, a mouse and other small woodland details emerge from the branching design as it moves behind the range, around the sink and beneath the cabinetry. The restrained colors complement the kitchen’s white upper cabinets, blue-gray lower cabinets, quartz countertops and brass-toned hardware.

Before installation, the illustrated tiles were carefully dry-laid to reconstruct the artist’s complete woodland scenes and determine their final positions. The layout required close coordination to maintain the continuity of the branches while accommodating corners, electrical outlets, appliances and changing cabinet heights. The completed backsplash gives the Lakeside Kitchen a one-of-a-kind focal point and demonstrates how detailed planning can successfully integrate original artwork into an everyday architectural finish.
