Berkshire Rock Garden

The Berkshire Rock Garden transformed an undeveloped wooded area into a distinctive outdoor retreat centered around a cedar hot tub. Berkshire Build & Craft assisted with the design and managed the complete woodland river rock garden project, including selective clearing, site preparation and coordinating new electrical service from the house.

River rock sourced from the Boston area creates a durable, low-maintenance surface that complements the surrounding woods and existing natural stone. Weathering-steel landscape edging defines the curved garden area while preserving the mature trees and prominent boulders already on the property. The cedar hot tub was supplied as a kit and completed with custom entrance steps designed by Berkshire Build & Craft.

Leaf-covered woodland with trees, undergrowth and natural boulders before the river-rock garden was created

Before construction, the area was covered with leaves, undergrowth, scattered stones and trees. Selected trees and movable stones were cleared to create the usable garden space while the largest natural boulders and established woodland character were retained. Routing electrical service through the site and carefully working around the remaining trees required coordinated planning. The finished garden feels intentionally shaped without losing its connection to the Berkshire woodland surrounding it.
